From a brief presentation of the history of the scientific building of the modern notion of transsexualism and the prescription of surgical treatment, as well as a survey of some legal issues related to transsexuality and some psychoanalytic conceptions about the transsexual phenomenon, this article presents some reflections on the relationship between transsexuality and society / modern subjectivity.
