Currently, in Rio de Janeiro city, the feeling of insecurity is part of everyday life for all citizen, configuring itself as a key feature in contemporary life. The objective of this work was to study the process of intimidation and cooptation of community leaders in slums of Rio de Janeiro by traffickers, militias and police, observing whether and how this phenomenon has affected the socio-spatial development and health of these own leaders. The study was conducted with thirty community leaders who live in the city. We conducted semi-structured interviews, analyzed through the content analysis. It was found important links between violence and suffering, whereas leaders who reported having experienced some type of violence, as a rule, were the same that reported major health problems. There was a prevalence of psychosomatic symptoms. The psychological suffering was associated with some type of violence related to their political and social action.  On the collective level, we can say that urban violence hinders and even prevents the socio-spatial development in the segregated territories.
