FORTES, Isabel. O sofrimento como travessia: Nietzsche e a psicanálise. Rev. Epos [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.1, pp. 99-111. ISSN 2178-700X.

The article offers an analysis of the human suffering theme in Nietzsche's and Freud's works, looking for theoretical correlations between these authors. Nietzsche' philosophy stands out by its discourse about this topic in several of his books. On the other hand, psychic suffering has a key place in the clinical theoretical field of psychoanalysis, as an essential element for its existence. In both authors, suffering is a passage to be traversed on the road to joy, or for psychic change to take place. The theme of psychic pain in Nietzsche is inspected employing the tokens of culpability, namely bad conscience and resentment. Conceivable ways out of these forms of suffering are analyzed by the notions of amor fati and of bliss. In Freud, neurosis comes out as a psychic creation intended to avoid pain. Neurosis is presented as a token of culpability in Freudian theory, a defense mechanism aiming to shelter the psyche from the tragic aspect of existence. Human helplessness is studied as something bordering on the irreparable, thus pointing to a tragic way for psychoanalysis.
