AREVALO, Amaral Palevi Gómez. Voices from the closet... prejudice and discrimination to LGBT people in el Salvador. Rev. Epos [online]. 2016, vol.7, n.2, pp. 4-26. ISSN 2178-700X.

This paper aims to reflect on the forms that prejudice acquire against those who manifest a sexual orientation and expression of gender different from that imposed by the social conventions of heteronormativity in El Salvador. Various areas where LGBT people suffer multiple forms of discrimination are analyzed: family, education, health, work, security, media. The sources used come from two priority areas: a) documents and reports from different LGBT organizations and associations; and b) bibliographic review on LGBT themes produced in different Salvadoran universities between 1988 and 2015, with special focus in knowing how the area of psychology managed these issues. The conclusion shows that the manifestations of discrimination and prejudice towards LGBT people are multifaceted, being strongly related to social markers of difference such as social class, generation and geography, and are based on a violent exercise of power against those whose expressions of gender and sexuality is different from the obligatory heterosexual binary norm.

Palavras-chave : El Salvador; LGBT; discrimination; violence; sexuality.
