Violence Against Women (VCM) perpetrated by intimate partner has presented significant growth in Brazil, being considered a Public Health issue. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the understanding of professionals at a Reference Center for Assistance to Women (CRAM), in the interior of Bahia, about the causes of permanence of women in situations of violence. Six CRAM employees and former employees participated in this study. It is a field research, qualitative, exploratory and descriptive. A semistructured questionnaire and direct observation were used for data collection. The material was analyzed and categorized using the technique of content analysis. The interpretation was based on the psychoanalytic framework and recent research on the subject. The results indicate the existence of two thematic categories: the first involves the perception about VAW, which includes the concept of gender, the damage caused by violence and the high rate of permanence of women in the relationship. The second, brings the possible causes that shape this permanence: financial dependence, children and emotional dependence. Emphasis is given to the importance of strengthening the social-welfare network, as well as the contributions of Psychology and Psychoanalysis to enable a singular listening of the condition in question.
