The process of loss of companion at any time of life that will occur will be addressed through the use of adaptive mechanisms of the surviving spouse to your new emotional reality, which may involve the development of pathologies related to the suffering caused by the absence of the one who left. The goals correspond to understand the implications of widowhood on health, describe the extent to which the person's emotional state in case of widowhood affect the production of disease, to relate the life story of the couple, the time of marriage and the degree of affection to the type and severity of disease and to seek the expansion of knowledge regarding the care of nursing in this context in reference merleau-pontyan. This was a descriptive study with qualitative and comprised 34 elderly subjects aged greater than or equal to 60 years in case of widowhood, focusing on the development of pathologies in the period after loss of spouse. The scenario is the Institute of Geriatric Education of Niterói - RJ. We used the technique of self-report along with a semi-structured script to direct and facilitate the interviews. After data collection and transcription of the speeches, we performed a step of categorizing the data, searching for meaning units that were examined in the light of the theoretical merleau-pontyan. The results showed that several factors influence the degree and intensity of the shock of the loss and how to set the departure of partner, length of marriage, characteristics of life together and affinity in general. It follows that at any moment the loss of a spouse will occur depending on the degree of affection of the couple and how they rolled out their married life, may lead to physical manifestations widowed as a result of stress generated in the process of widowhood.
