Abstract

VENANCIO, Gisely Naura et al. Using and necessity of dentures for the elderly from the North region of Brazil: Reflective study of the results of the Dental Health Project Brazil 2003 and 2010. Saúde Transform. Soc. [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.4, pp. 78-82. ISSN 2178-7085.

Brazil presents an increasing elderly population, causing changes in oral health needs. Thus, this study was an analysis of the survey results on conditions of the Brazilian Population Oral Health, called SB Brazil 2003 and 2010. We survey variables: use and need for upper and lower denture in the population aged 65 to 74 years in northern Brazil, with a total of 744 seniors in 2003 and 1721 in 2010. We analyzed the percentage distribution of use and need for prostheses in this population by making a comparative reflection on literature. The use of dental prosthesis is very low, compared to edentulism, highlighting the need for partial dentures and totals. The recovery measures and oral health programs / oral health services need to be more effective to change this reality.
