Abstract

GONCALO, Camila da Silva  and  BARROS, Nelson Filice de. Telephone interviews in qualitative health research. Saúde Transform. Soc. [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.1, pp. 22-26. ISSN 2178-7085.

The aim of this paper is to discuss methodological characteristics of qualitative studies conducted by Telephone Interviews (ET). A Systematic literature review was performed in the electronic databases of journals: "Qualitative Health Research", "Sociology of Health & Ilness" and "Social Science & Medicine" (period 2000 to 2010). The initial survey resulted in 242 citations and after the refinement of searches followed by application of the criteria for inclusion/exclusion of only four articles were selected, three articles published in "Qualitative Health Research" and one in "Social Science & Medicine." The articles were analyzed superficially how the ET were planned and conducted. The justifications for their use are: the cost and the need for small infrastructure. It is concluded that there is need to debate this topic in the literature because, although having the advantages, the ET preclude the registration of data from the body language and unspoken expressions that are important elements to be taken especially in qualitative research.
