This report presents the potential and challenges of an extension practice held by the Nursing Course of UDESC (State University of Santa Catarina), which aims at fostering dialogue and rapprochement between the University and indigenous peoples of a municipality in the Western Region of Santa Catarina. This project was developed with adolescents and young adults from an indigenous village. The practices included workshops on art, professional qualification, health and education, based on the needs of these individuals and their culture. The activity was attended by professors and students of the Zootechnics Course of UDESC, creating opportunities to exchange knowledge and practices, as well as reflections on these populations, their living conditions and health. The actions developed from "Conversation Circles", were supported by the proposal of the "Culture Circles" by Paulo Freire and contributed to the promotion of health and citizenship, for the qualification of these individuals, as well as to the appreciation of indigenous culture, considered a social asset. In the six meetings held throughout 2012 the following themes were problematized: culture, sexuality, drug and alcohol abuse and beekeeping. Such experience revealed obstacles as the geographical distance and difficult access to the indigenous lands, challenges for the realization of dialogic practices, wide acceptability of the Guarani and the need for rapprochement between different cultures and various potential proposals for the promotion of indigenous health.
