Mental disorders (TM) affect the general population, and studies show that almost half of the brasilian population may have at least one episode of some mental disorder during their lifetime. The health care policies advocated comprehensive care and humane for users and health services should be prepared for this assistance. Within this perspective, the aim of this paper is to describe the experience of home visits (VD) lived in a public outpatient clinic performed to patients with TM. Through home visits could be raised the positives points that facilitated patient adherence to treatment and the negative points that should be worked out to prevent relapses or complications. During the realization of the VD was verified using medication, family support, socioeconomic conditions, verification of physical and psychological conditions of the patient, assessment of applications for admissions and other family demands requested by professional health staff and / or families. This experience reaffirmed that the home visit can be an ally to plan the actions of patient care by allowing the approximation of reality family and social user. However, we are faced with difficulties related to the service network of public attention to the user and their family.
