Abstract

This study analyzed the relationship between the coping strategies in a sample of adolescents and their parents. The sample consisted of 41 male and female adolescents aged 13 to 18 years, with emotional problems, and theirs parents, from a psychological service in a public mental health institution of Mexico City. Both teens and parents used approach coping as seeking social support, moreover avoidance and antisocial coping too. Adolescents' coping was related with their parents' coping. Sex differences and the implications of antisocial and aggressive action and the instinctive action of parents in the adolescent's coping were discussed. The current study highlights the need to design intervention programs, specially addressed to promoting productive coping strategies, both, for adolescents and their parents.
