Abstract

SIQUEIRA, Felipe Queiroz; CALZA, Tiago Zanatta; SARRIERA, Jorge Castellá  and  FREITAS, Lia Beatriz de Lucca. The value of values: the perspective of parents towards their children. Est. Inter. Psicol. [online]. 2017, vol.8, n.1, pp. 55-75. ISSN 2236-6407.

This study was based on the cultural-ecological theory. The aim was to identify, in parents of children and adolescents, what values they consider more and less important, and to analyze their justifications. Twenty-two parents answered a scale to assess the importance of 27 values and a semi-structured interview, in which they listed the three most and less important values, justifying their choices. The most important values were: honesty, justice and determination. The least important ones were: ambition, following parents’ rules and leadership. Some of the justifications for the most important values were: respecting others, being a way for achieving one's goals, and including other values. For the least important ones: causing damages, not being essential, and not guaranteeing success. Results were discussed based on literature. We emphasized the importance of values as an interdisciplinary subject and the necessity to reflect upon the values we want to develop in our society.

Keywords : values; parents; child parenting; morality.
