Abstract

SILVA, Sandra Araújo da  and  ALVES, Sergio Henrique de Souza. Knowledge about type 2 diabetes and its relationship with the adherence to treatment. Est. Inter. Psicol. [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.2, pp. 39-57. ISSN 2236-6407.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) type 2 can be prevented and controlled as long as the person makes some adjustments in their lifestyle. The knowledge of the patient regarding their condition can contribute with low adherence to treatment that is, not to follow the recommendations passed by the health team. The objective of this study was to relate the participant's knowledge about type 2 DM and treatment adherence behavior. Five patients were asked to take part in a qualitative investigation in which they answered a semi-structured interview. A content analysis was performed and it was observed that the communication of the diagnosis was not considered a nonadherence factor. Participants were able to promote changes in crystallized customs for some time without a high cost of response and they presented adherence behavior for self-care, for example: physical exercises and medication use. On the other hand, there was low adherence to follow the diet prescribed by health professionals.
