This historical research on the spread of psychoanalysis in the State of Bahia (Brazil) focuses on the role played by Arthur Ramos as its main herald in the 1920's and 1930's. Ramos's achievements in the fields of psychiatry, mental hygiene and anthropology are pointed out as well as his psychoanalytical approach on the issues of madness, children education and culture.
