Resumo

The origin of Psychosomatic can be traced back to Hippocrates, but the modern understanding in this area has its beginning in the early twentieth century, from the studies of Georg Groddeck and Sandor Ferenczi, and later an official foundation in the USA by Franz Alexander. The objective of this study, a literature review in order to analyze if the paths taken to the birth of Psychosomatic of our times were able to rescue what was practiced as Medicine in ancient Greece. Therefore, this research has come the thoughts developed by Groddeck. Then it was examined the theses developed by Sandor Ferenczi and the further unfolding of the American Psychoanalysis. Finally, it proposed a discussion of the implications of these thoughts, concluding that the USA current carries assumptions of modern Biomedicine, while Groddeck is responsible for the largest rescue of Greek Medicine, through notions symbolization, interpretation and lack of distinction between mind and body.
