Abstract

GOLDBERG, Leonardo. Discourse and materialism: the influence of Democritus of Abdera on the conception of language for Jacques Lacan. Analytica [online]. 2019, vol.8, n.14, pp. 1-8. ISSN 2316-5197.

This study aims to understand the influence of atomistic physics of the philosopher Democritus of Abdera in the conception of the language of Jacques Lacan, specifically in materialism concept of the signified. We consider, by reading the two texts that is fundamental to understand the idea in the language of Jacques Lacan, "L'etourdit" and "Speaking of Rome", and that the conception of language in Lacan is influenced by the perspective adopted by democritean materialism (beyond saussurian linguistic). Lacan makes use of an interpretation of materialism of Democritus that the signified can be assumed as the meaning of something material.
