This paper seeks to analyze the notion of style, specifically in the manner through which it is approached by Jacques Lacan in 1966, in the foreword to his collected works, the Écrits. In this small text, Lacan guides the reader through a series of propositions concerning the notion of style. He begins with a reference to the thinking of Buffon, according to whom style is equivalent to the man himself, and then points to the idea of style as a form of addressment, which would include the notion of the Other. Finally, he arrives at a formulation according to which style is the object. In this paper, we intend to follow these steps, with the aim of better understanding the developments through which the French psychoanalyst guides his reader. To reach this objective, it is crucial that we first analyze the main historical developments of the complex notion of style in other fields, such as literature and philosophy, beginning with its classical sense and working toward its modern conception, which gained force in the decade of 1960, when Lacan publishes his Écrits. This investigation will offer us a theoretical basis upon which to approach the specificity of the notion of style in Lacan's teachings.
