The observation that students applying for the postgraduate degree in Psychology have doubts about the definition of the method of research proper to Psychoanalysis has triggered the considerations made in the present paper. In it, without the intention to present a universal proposition, the authors support the thesis that the method used by Freud in the construction of psychoanalysis' foundation can be used as a method of research in Psychoanalysis at Universities. With this aim, they present psychoanalysis birth moment, emphasizing that, since its beginning, Freud has adopted a singular methodology through which clinical management interrogates the theoretical framework that sustains it, indicating that constants processes of formalization are necessary.
