Abstract

SICHIERI, Rosely  and  PEREIRA, Rosangela Alves. The social problem of obesity and its prevalence in children and teenagers. Desidades [online]. 2020, n.27, pp. 93-102. ISSN 2318-9282.

The interview brings the discussion of the multiplicity of social and environmental factors associated with child and teen obesity, which are rarely investigated and that are largely ignored by public policies in Education. In Brazil, this public health problem affects one third of children under the age of 10 and is concerning insofar as it presents itself evermore precociously. The interviewee points towards the need for an approach that understands obesity as a social and environmental problem, surpassing individual issues. It is about approaching the systems of food production and consumption that affect public health and childhood in an ample manner, allowing for more effective preventative and regulatory measures relating to obesity.

Keywords : child obesity; teen obesity; public health; malnutrition; food systems.
