COSTA, Rafaelle C. S.; BUOSO, Fernanda Papa; ROMANO, Thales Vinícius Mozaner  and  BAZON, Marina Rezende. Contributions of international literature to mental health care for justice-involved adolescents in Brazil. Desidades [online]. 2021, n.29, pp. 100-116. ISSN 2318-9282.

ABSTRACT This literature review aimed to highlight the knowledge produced at the interface of mental health and commitment of offenses. For this, the following descriptors were used in Web of Science database: (mental health) AND (offense* OR offender* OR delinquen*) AND (juvenile* OR adolescent* OR youth*). The analysis of 42 articles allowed the creation of three categories: 1) Prevalence of mental health disorders and related variables, 2) Studies on the association between crimes and mental health problems, and 3) Prevalence of suicidal behavior and related variables. The association between delinquency and mental health can occur in both directions and depends on the types of disorders and offenses studied. Suicidal behavior is associated with deprivation of liberty. Identifying the presence of adverse childhood experiences, school problems, substance use and mental health comorbidities can help in understanding these relationships. It is expected that this study could enable advances in mental health practices in the socio-educational system.

Keywords : mental health; adolescence; juvenile delinquency; violence; adverse experiences.
