MENEZES, Jaileila Araújo; CALADO, Débora Carla Pereira  and  SILVA, Juliana Catarine Barbosa. Challenges to the movement of young women in the city. Desidades [online]. 2021, n.30, pp. 14-29. ISSN 2318-9282.

ABSTRACT This article aims to discuss the movement of young peripheral women through the neighborhoods of Recife, Brasil, and understand how they relate to the urban context. As a theoretical-methodological framework, we used the post-structural feminist debate and intersectionality to address the categories of articulation that collaborate in understanding the challenges of circulation in the city. In the workshops and interviews carried out, the young participants showed an urban context that hinders the paths of poor people, does not guarantee basic rights such as leisure for peripheral communities and makes female bodies liable to violence. The implementation of more cycle lanes and leisure spaces was highlighted as fundamental for improving life in the peripheries. In our reflections, we observed the absence of the State in the effective confrontation of the referred problems and highlighted the importance of guaranteeing democratic spaces so that young women can compose the guidelines related to the improvement of their living conditions in the city.

Keywords : youths; gender; right to the city; intersectionality.
