Abstract
SANTANA, Mariana Valadares de Macedo and CERQUEIRA-SANTOS, Elder. Anxiety evaluation and its relation with children's family and school climate. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.1, pp. 141-151. ISSN 2359-0769.
Anxiety is a high incidence disorder affecting children and youth. It may cause significant damage to individual's functioning. For these two age groups, family and school are presented as the main social environments, playing a significant role in their development and well-being. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the levels of anxiety in children and adolescents and to investigate its relationship with the family and school climate. Sample was 62 students enrolled at a private school in Aracaju Brazil. The participants completed the SCAS-Brazil and two scales of perception of school and family climates. High average for family climate (M = 60.00, SD = 11.73) and school climate (M = 34.8, SD = 5.20) were found. Contrary to the expectation of the study, there was no statistical relationship between family environment and anxiety (r = 0.018, p = 0.45), existing only between school climate and anxiety (r = -0.337, p = 0.01). Due to gap of literature in Brazil that combines these three factors, it is hoped that this study contributes to the knowledge and assist new research designs.
