CURI, Danielle  e  DIAS, Maria das Graças Leite Villela. The body as support for the symptom's inscription. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.3, pp.463-474. ISSN 2359-0769.

It was from their suffering and from the bodily symptom that the hysteric patients lead Freud to create psychoanalysis. Ever since, we know that there is something revolutionary in the psychoanalytical approach to the body, which is fundamentally distinct from that of medicine, insofar as, for psychoanalysis, the human being does not limit itself to the biological body. In dealing with the hysterics, Freud notices that their speech conveys desire, expressed through the symptom, which means that the psychoanalytical theory highlights, among other things, the body as an effect of the unconscious, marked by language - a place for desire accomplishment as well as for drive satisfaction. Thus, the body, from the psychoanalytical perspective, presents itself as the result of the relation between mental and somatic, from which the concept of drive is conceived: the body is, at once, source and place of drive satisfaction. Symptoms, on the other hand, locate the relationship which is established with the subject's jouissance mode. Departing from the paths of formation of the hysteric symptom in its double versant - meaning and jouissance -, we will approach Elizabeth von R.'s case, aiming to elucidate her conversion symptom in its relations to the phallus and to phallic jouissance.

Palavras-chave : body; unconscious; conversion symptom; phallus; phallic jouissance.
