The purpose of this study was to identify the stress factors of university professors in private education and analyze the possible repercussions on health. Based on the qualitative approach, nine professors from universities in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre were interviewed. The results present as main stress factors: work overload, chargings and relationship difficulties with supervisors and students; damaging the health of these professionals. Iimprovements in work management, in the teaching process, and in coping strategies as alternatives for stress reduction were suggested by the professors. However, these do not bring a criticism directed at the current forms of management practiced in private higher education, related to the ideology of excellence, pragmatism and mercantilism.
