Abstract

FURTADO, Mariama Augusto  and  SZAPIRO, Ana Maria. The place of suffering in the discourse of contemporary biotechnology. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2016, vol.16, n.2, pp. 93-104. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.16.2.93-104.

This theoretical study intends to analyze the place of suffering in the speech of contemporary biotechnology medicine. For this, we have historically recovered the process of building the different ways of understanding suffering, analyzing the gaze on the suffering inaugurated by medical speech. Next, we try to understand the transformations in the speech of modern anatomopathological medicine towards what we call biotechnological medicine. In this passage we observe changes in the way of understanding suffering, which must be examined having as reference the context of broader transformations underway in post-modernity. It is in this context that exalts values linked to efficiency, productivity and happiness that suffering is seen as pathology to be corrected. In fact, a process of continuous expansion of diagnoses has brought to the field of psychopathology common behaviors and subjective states that were not conceived as disease.

Keywords : medicalization; post-modernity; health; suffering.
