There is an extensive debate about research in psychoanalysis within the undergraduate and postgraduate programs of universities. Based on this discussion, this article proposes to reflect on the methodological foundations of theoretical research, relating it to the basic premise of psychoanalysis on the indissociability between research and clinical practice. Fundamental concepts such as unconsciousness, repetition and desire were erected by Freud and read by Lacan in order to sustain the psychoanalytical method in research. The Freudian technical recommendations were presented as a way for theoretical research in psychoanalysis. Desire is a crucial aspect in the constitution of psychoanalytic praxis, however, it is embarrassing to question the desire of the researcher in the choice of his object of study. For science, it was supposed to be neutral in the unfolding of the facts. In the field of psychoanalytic research, the researcher cannot be erased from his research, since he speaks of a certain place and appears to be inextricably implicated in the material he intends to analyze. It is this question about the desire that makes psychoanalysis a field in which the subject-researcher cannot be counted. If the subject is considered by science as an annoying factor of error, psychoanalysis comes to reintroduce the notion of subject in its own dimension. We conclude that the research is not restricted to the clinic, but can only be given the clinical dimension in its horizon. Even if in a given research there is no explicit reference to the clinical material, or even if the researcher in psychoanalysis does not act clinically, this same researcher has his own clinical experience and is part of his research. All research in psychoanalysis must be based on the concept of unconscious.
