Abstract

CERQUEIRA-SANTOS, Elder et al. Interpersonal contact with homosexuals and beliefs about homoparental adoption. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2017, vol.17, n.2, pp. 87-100. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v17i2.5991.

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between interpersonal contact with homosexuals and beliefs about adoption by same-sex couples. The main hypothesis of the study was that subjects with a higher level of interpersonal contact presented more favorable characteristics to homo-parenting. A quantitative, exploratory and analytical instrument (survey with quasi-experimental design) was used through on-line collection, with the participation of 732 individuals, who were randomly assigned to one of three scenarios with stories about adoptive couples (heterosexual, gay, and lesbian). Participants answered sociodemographic questionnaire about religious and spirituality, political positioning and beliefs about homosexuality. The data analysis found a statistically significant relationship between the variables of contact intensity and homoparental adoption. It was found that participants were more favorable to adoption when the adoptive couple were heterosexual, followed by lesbians, with more rejection for gays. The impact is discussed if measures to support diversity and encourage adoption by homosexual couples were guaranteed.

Keywords : adoption; homosexuality; homoparentality.
