Abstract

MENDES, Carla Martins. The Place of Shame in the Family with Teenagers. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2020, vol.20, n.1, pp. 1-10. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v20i1.e7908.

The present study, part of a wider investigation into shame and modesty in family intimacy, aims to investigate the perception of shame in families with adolescent children. For that, a qualitative research was carried out in which 8 subjects from the middle socioeconomic segment were interviewed, with children between the ages of 12 and 18 years. The results were analyzed according to the content analysis method in its categorical aspect. To achieve the objectives formulated in this work, the following categories will be discussed: perception of shame coupled with guilt; identification of the shame by the look of the other; shame and social image. It was found that shame and guilt are perceived as undifferentiated feelings. The triggering of shame emerges from the gaze of the other and the failure of social and family expectations is crucial to trigger such feeling.

Keywords : shame; guilt; family; teenagers.
