SANTOS, Antonia Claudia Soares Leão dos; SILVA, Luan Sampaio  e  PEDROSO, Janari da Silva. Psychoanalytical Observation of the Mother-Baby Relationship in Prison. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2020, vol.20, n.1, pp. 1-11. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v20i1.e8856.

This article is the result of a master's research conducted with the psychoanalytic method of observing the mother-baby relationship created by Esther Bick, and the context used was a female prison in the metropolitan region of Belém do Pará. The participants were three dyads, whose babies were born in prison. The mentioned method recommends that the total observation time be two years; however there has been an adaptation as to the time due to the fact that it is a two-year master's research. Thus, the observations were made for five months, with a weekly session. The transcripts were written shortly after the observations, and were supervised afterwards. Psychoanalytic theory supported the theoretical framework, more specifically classic human development authors, such as Winnicott, Mahler, Klein and Spitz. The results were grouped into three themes: the mother and her baby; the baby's lap and stroller; and playing time. The mothers were young, with low education; multiparous, were arrested for the first time, and dedicated exclusive care to the newborn. As for the legal issue, the three responded criminally for their involvement in drug trafficking. The study proved that the Bick method can be used in a prison environment with the purpose of understanding the baby's emotional development.
