Abstract

SCALON, Ettore Fonseca; SCORSOLINI-COMIN, Fabio  and  MACEDO, Alice Costa. Understanding Health-Disease Processes in Embedding Mediums of Umbanda. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2020, vol.20, n.2, pp. 1-13. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v20i2.e10003.

From the cultural approach of health-disease processes, mediumistic consultations in Umbanda are part of the popular care system. The objective was to investigate how incorporation mediums understand health-disease processes, specifically those related to psychic illness. Seven incorporation mediums, aged between 26 and 58 years old, members of a terreiro (temple) in the city of Uberaba / MG, Brazil, were interviewed. The average length of experience as an incorporation medium was 8.28 years. The conceptions of health and disease refer to both the ontological model and the relational health model. It is concluded that the terreiro (temple) centralizes the health-disease process, taking care of those who care (mediums) and also of those looking for care (consultant), in a perspective that must be understood in its complexity and potential for integrality.
