Abstract

TEODOZIO, Andressa Milczarck; BARTH, Marina Camargo; WENDLAND, Jaqueline  and  LEVANDOWSKI, Daniela Centenaro. Particularities of Maternal Grief Due to Pregnancy Loss: Qualitative Study. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2020, vol.20, n.2, pp. 1-14. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v20i2.e9834.

The grieving process resulting from a pregnancy loss has been described in the literature as specific experience and little socially recognized. In this study, we sought to understand the repercussions and particularities of the grieving process resulting from a pregnancy loss through the study of multiple cases (Yin, 2005), of a qualitative and transversal character, with four mothers (18 to 29 years old) who experienced at least one pregnancy loss in the last five years. The following instruments were applied: Sociodemographic and Clinical Data Questionnaire, Loss Experience Questionnaire, Prolonged Grief Disorder, Brief Symptom Inventory, in addition to an interview about the experience of maternal mourning and the experience of current motherhood. The analysis of the cases, based on the psychoanalytic perspective, made it possible to identify that the physical procedures in the face of pregnancy loss enabled a way of registering and elaboration of psychic experience, however, this mourning process was permeated by narcissistic and traumatic elements. Investigations in the area with women who did not have children after pregnancy loss are suggested.

Keywords : pregnancy loss; maternal mourning; trauma; narcissism.
