Abstract

SILVA, Milena da Rosa; TEODOZIO, Andressa Milczarck; PEDROTTI, Bruna Gabriella  and  FRIZZO, Giana Bitencourt. The Father in the Context of Maternal Postpartum Depression - and six years later, what place does this father occupy?. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2020, vol.20, n.3, pp. 1-12. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v20i3.e10074.

Based on Winnicott's propositions, the present study aimed to understand the father's place in two different moments of child development: in the baby's first year of life, in the context of maternal postpartum depression, and, later, in the child's sixth year of life. Two families participated in this study that, in the beginning, underwent brief parent-baby psychotherapy and, in the second moment, participated in a follow-up process. The results obtained indicated that, in the babies' first year of life, the parents constituted a good quality relationship with their babies and could understand the mother's need for intense dedication to the baby; however, they did not provide all the necessary support to the wives at that time and context. The subtle difficulties observed in the babies' first year of life, related to the role that would be expected from these parents, were still evident in the children's sixth-year life.

Keywords : postpartum depression; dad; baby; kid; family.
