Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Thiago Araújo. Considerations on Religious Fundamentalism from the Freudian Critique of Religion. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.2, pp. 1-12. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v21i2.e10333.

Based on a literature review, this article aims to approach religious fundamentalism through a criticism based on Freudian theory, but, above all, on Freud's approach to religion, articulated with ideas from some scholars on the subject. In his work, Freud did not deal with religious fundamentalism, however, his thought can be taken as a theoretical contribution that subsidizes the understanding of this vaunting contemporary phenomenon. As it is a form of complex religiosity, which has gained social influence and political strength nationally and worldwide, critical interventions are made on fundamentalism from various areas of knowledge, such as Freudian psychoanalysis. The developed reflections help understanding how the hunger for power, aggressiveness, intolerance, and intransigence of fundamentalist movements can be understood through the drive dynamism that moves individuals and groups aggregated by ideological identifications.

Keywords : fundamentalism; Freud; religion; psychoanalysis.
