Given that Husserl and the phenomenological movement were fundamentally concerned with offering a transcendental science that rigorously sought to identify the structures of experience as the nature of knowledge, it is not surprising that other disciplines were also interested in knowing and applying some of their proposals and results. This debate, which has taken shape since the beginnings of phenomenology, is now updated in discussions both in contemporary phenomenological psychopathology and in the field of qualitative research that makes some use of phenomenology. Firstly, this article seeks to present the tension that exists throughout the phenomenological movement about the possibility, validity, and usefulness of phenomenology outside of phenomenological philosophy. We then argue that, from the examples of Jaspers and the current of classical and contemporary phenomenological psychopathology, it is possible to offer sufficient reasons to justify both the possibility of a non-philosophical use of phenomenology, as well as its usefulness. We do not believe that the primary purposes of phenomenological philosophy are to establish and provide a framework for the various other disciplines; however, a more comprehensive conception of phenomenological science and its historical debate shows that its results and possibilities are fruitful for the sciences, which today oppose the various forms of reductionism in different fields of knowledge.
