Abstract

COUGO, Vitória Rosa; BIAZUS, Camilla Baldicera; BRAGANCA, Ana Carolina Bicca  and  PERRONE, Claudia Maria. Links between the Feminine and Psychoanalysis in the Work of Louise Bourgeois. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.1, pp. 1-13. ISSN 2359-0769.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v22i1.e10277.

This work arises from the association created between the work of the artist Louise Bourgeois and psychoanalytic theory, intending to produce a space capable of historicizing the places occupied by women in society and their relations with the feminine. Louise Bourgeois was a precursor of feminist art in the 70s in New York and for being one of the first artists to raise the theme of the feminine and motherhood through her art. Through an essayistic methodological perspective, three works by the artist were listed for this study: Femme Maison, Arch of Hysteria, and Maman, from which it became possible to think about the social changes that imprinted transformations in the position of the feminine concerning phallic logic. The analysis of the three works made it possible to follow the displacements of the feminine - from the woman-house to the woman-spider in juxtaposition to the discursive transformations that occurred from the weakening of religious knowledge to the rise of scientific discourse, which was crossed by the irruption of psychoanalytic theory. If before the woman was restricted to the home sphere, now she starts to occupy and have to take care of several places and functions and, therefore, ends up being captured by the illusion of self-sufficiency, supported by science and represented in this study from the Maman, which gives the woman the form of an arachnid. The contribution of this work, therefore, comprises the possibility of thinking critically, based on psychoanalytic theory and art, about the illusion of self-sufficiency caused by scientific discourses as the contemporary manifestation of the female conflict of dealing with the lack.

Keywords : art; motherhood; female sexuality; psychoanalysis.
