HOEWELL, Andressa Grando  e  SILVA, Milena da Rosa. MATERNITY AND WORK: INTERTWINING SOCIAL DISCOURSES IN WOMEN’S NARRATIVES DURING THE PANDEMIC. Psicol. clin. [online]. 2025, vol.37, e009.  Epub 06-Jun-2025. ISSN 0103-5665.  https://doi.org/10.33208/pc1980-5438v037e009.

The present text takes Lacan’s theory of discourses to think about the intertwining of the current social discourse in the subjectivity of women who mother and work, in the context of the situation of social distancing imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. This article uses empirical material, resulting from a survey carried out in 2020, the initial period of the pandemic. Through social networks, reports were collected from women who are mothers and work in response to the question: “What has it been like for you to be a woman and a mother in times of a pandemic?”. From these reports and the Lacanian theory of discourses, we take as a guide for reflection the question: how do the prevailing social discourses intertwine with the subjectivity of women who are mothers and professionals? It was observed that the experience of the pandemic shed light on issues that already existed before in the lives of women, not without considering the peculiarities arising from the imminence of illness and death. It was observed that the capitalist discourse collaborates with the overload of women, mothers and professionals by demanding ideals of completeness and totality. However, due to the non-fixity of where the subject is placed in the discursive structure, it is possible to face such demands, questioning them and allowing for the circulation of desire.
