SILVA, Paulo Gregório Nascimento da et al. Leary Impostorism Scale (LIS): Psychometric Evidence for the Brazilian Context. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2026, vol.25, e25570. Epub 10-Abr-2026. ISSN 1677-0471. https://doi.org/10.15689/ap.2026.25.e25570.
The Impostor Phenomenon (IP) is characterized by feelings of self-doubt and distorted beliefs about one’s intellectual capabilities, despite evidence to the contrary. However, methods for assessing this phenomenon are scarce in the Brazilian context. Therefore, the present study aimed to adapt the Leary Impostorism Scale (LIS) into Brazilian Portuguese and examine its psychometric properties. Two studies were conducted with participants from different Brazilian states. Study 1 (n=215) involved the cross-cultural adaptation of the LIS, followed by exploratory factor analysis, which indicated a single-factor structure. Study 2 (n=353) employed confirmatory factor analysis, corroborating the single-factor structure and demonstrating adequate internal consistency (>.90). Furthermore, the LIS showed positive correlations with the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale and maladaptive perfectionism, while adaptive perfectionism and self-esteem were negatively associated with impostorism. In conclusion, the LIS demonstrated satisfactory psychometric qualities.
