SANTOS, Maria Cristiane Pereira dos e MARQUES, Denilson Bezerra. Suffering and Defenses of Nursing Professionals in the Fight against COVID-19. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2023, vol.15, e15142190. Epub 09-Ago-2024. ISSN 2177-093X. https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v15i1.2190.
The COVID-19 pandemic involved elements such as contagion, illness and deaths, which had an impact on the work and psyche of nursing professionals. This study, from the Psychodynamics of Work perspective, aimed to understand the suffering and defenses at work of front-line nursing technicians and assistants in the fight against COVID-19. A descriptive study with a qualitative approach was carried out. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed by the method of Analysis of Nuclei of Senses. The themes were categorized by the criterion of similarity of semantic, logical and psychological meaning. It was identified that, in the struggle for mental health, these professionals confronted suffering at work through collective defense strategies, such as mutual protection and denial of fear. As an individual defense, sublimation was identified. The factor that most generated suffering was the death of patients, in contrast to the sublimation and desires of these professionals to save lives. The need to expand ways of recognizing the difficult work of caring for patients in the face of death was evidenced.
