ISOTTON, Rogério e DONELLI, Tagma Marina Schneider. Considerations on the theory of trauma in Freud and Ferenczi. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2023, n.60, pp.147-158. Epub 07-Fev-2025. ISSN 0100-3437. https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-3482.n60a15.
The history of psychoanalysis is steeped in trauma theory. In both Freud’s and Ferenczi’s work, research into the presence of traumatic aspects, their consequences and impacts on the subject’s psychic constitution stand out. Considering the importance of this theme in the contemporary clinical context, the aim of this study is to review the theory of trauma based on Freud and Ferenczi and contribute to an integrative understanding of their thinking in relation to this theme. e importance of intrapsychic reality for Freud and the intersubjective aspects for Ferenczi provide a unique foundation for their theory of trauma. In Freud’s work, debates about the extreme and trauma are evident, especially in the initial phase with the theory of seduction, the subsequent conceptualization of fantasy, the theory of infantile sexuality, arriving at the drive theory with the death drive and the repetition compulsion. Ferenczi develops the theory of trauma in a way that makes it possible to understand it in stages: time of the unspeakable, time of testimony, time of denial and identification with the aggressor. It is possible to find in the work of Freud and Ferenczi various points of confluence and divergence, which will be addressed in this study.
