This text aims to make considerations about metapsychology and highlight its relevance in the development of psychoanalytic knowledge. From this perspective, we return to the theoretical and conceptual conceptions of Freudian metapsychology, so named to specify its investigation, which goes beyond the psychology of consciousness. Ferenczi endorses this specificity and expands it with his studies on the elasticity of the technique. We add the contributions of Pierre Fédida, who differentiates metapsychological discourse, which engenders the production of knowledge, from scientific and metaphysical discourses, which have the character of doctrine. Luís Cláudio Figueiredo follows Fédida’s line of thought and analyzes it based on contemporary psychoanalysis. To this end, we reflect on the articulation between: dream theory, transference and psychoanalytic technique. Considering that the metapsychological study is “the novelty that does not age despite time”.
