Abstract

PEREIRA, Arthur Teixeira. “A child is being beaten”: the beating fantasy as a discursive scenario of the unconscious subject. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2024, n.61, pp.63-70.  Epub June 09, 2025. ISSN 0100-3437.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-3482.n61a05.

This article aims to discuss the Freudian essay titled “A child is being beaten” to situate its contributions to the notion of fantasy in general, as well as to identify the discursive nature present in the so-called beating fantasies. Sigmund Freud establishes the division of the beating fantasy into three distinct phases, each identified by a subjective position the child assumes, which can be summarized in a phrase: “My father is beating the child I hate”, “My father is beating me”, and “A child is being beaten”, respectively. Based on the notion of fantasy in its two poles – subject ($) and object (a), according to its matheme ($ ◊ a) – we find that one of the significant contributions of this essay is the realization that fantasy constitutes the discursive scenario of the subject in analysis.

Keywords : Beating fantasy; Psychic reality; Unconscious.
