SOUZA, Rogério Ferreira de. The issue of adaptation: notes on two clinical cases in child psychoanalysis (“Little Hans” and “Dick” cases) in light of Ferenczian Theory. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2024, n.61, pp.119-133.  Epub 09-Jun-2025. ISSN 0100-3437.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-3482.n61a11.

In dialogue with the article Adaptation of the Family to the Child, written by Sándor Ferenczi and published in 1927, this essay seeks to analytically discuss the role that the family plays during the child's psychic development and in the formation of potential infantile psychoneuroses. This research is based on the observation of two classic cases in psychoanalytic literature: the “Little Hans” case (1909), presented by Sigmund Freud, and the “Dick” case (1930), portrayed by Melanie Klein. Despite the two decades separating these cases, both were developed during a period when child psychoanalysis was still undergoing theoretical and clinical maturation. In this context, this essay intends not only to elucidate the differences between the types of infantile psychoneuroses presented in the mentioned cases but also to reflect, based on Ferenczi's text, on the idea of “adaptation” as a process through which adults comprehend the child's world and that is tied to and shaped by cultural (moral) dictates.
