CEMIN, Tânia Maria  e  FERREIRA, Anne Szalanski. Interpersonal relationships in contemporaneity: Narcissism in search of virtual applause. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2024, n.62, pp.19-34.  Epub 07-Nov-2025. ISSN 0100-3437.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-3482.n62a02.

The rise of digital social media and its constant presence in the daily lives of many individuals has revolutionized the way in which interpersonal relationships can be formed and maintained in contemporary times. The objective of this study is to identify possible connections between digital social media and narcissistic characteristics in contemporary interpersonal relationships. This is a qualitative research of a descriptive, exploratory and interpretative nature, with content analysis. The source of analysis refers to the episode: Free Fall from 2016 of the series Black Mirror, listing three categories: Digital Social Media: space of dreams and recognition; Behaviors and Relationships Governed by Social; and Social Influence in the Search for Personal Satisfaction. It was possible to identify that digital social media can represent spaces for personal promotion and the search for validation, while at the same time tending to actively influence the aspirations of users based on the content presented. It can be seen that the interaction provided by such platforms tends to reinforce egocentric behaviors, which are fueled by virtual applause, interfering with the depth and authenticity of interpersonal bonds. Thus, it is considered that digital social media, by functioning as relational mediators, not only reflect, but also amplify and perpetuate characteristics of narcissistic functioning, in a process of constant interaction between the social context and the digital environment. It is therefore important to reflect on the use of these platforms, which, although they offer benefits and facilities, require caution to avoid possible negative effects on the promotion and maintenance of healthy and genuine relationships.

Palavras-chave : narcisism; interpersonal relationships; digital social media; psychoanalysis; contemporaneity.
