LOPES, Anchyses Jobim. Caravaggio and the Madonna of Loreto – the potential space in the alliance between realism and the fantastic. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2024, n.62, pp.55-70. Epub 07-Nov-2025. ISSN 0100-3437. https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-3482.n62a05.
Brief biography of Caravaggio, the leading painter of the Italian Baroque period. An artist who did not produce drawings to later paint them, but rather live models in theatrical scenes. The Madonna of Loreto, or the Madonna of the Pilgrims, in whose house, together with the Child, he is said to have come from the Holy Land to Italy through the air, accompanied by angels. The commissioning of the painting for the Basilica of Saint Augustine in Rome. Realism associated with the fantastic in Caravaggio’s painting. Description of the transitional space postulated by Winnicott, with additions from his reading by McDougall. The legend that through faith the images in the painting could come to life: a mixture of realism, fantasy and infantile sexuality. Coincidence or not, the foot of the Virgin resembles the foot of Gradiva, a sculpture admired by Freud. Sensuality, fantasy and infantile desire, transformed into a work of art by the transitional space.
