This essay seeks to revisit Lacan’s interpretation of the Freudian concept of das Ding, which he translates as the “outside-of-meaning” and relates it to desire and anxiety. This position das Ding as a kind of precursor to the Lacanian concept of object a, the lost object, representative of lack and cause of desire, which propels the subject in their incessant search for satisfaction.
