CASAGRANDE, Mariana Ferreira. The uses of religious belief in the psychoanalytic clinic in Freud and Winnicott’s theory. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2024, n.62, pp.145-160. Epub 07-Nov-2025. ISSN 0100-3437. https://doi.org/10.5935/2175-3482.n62a12.
Based on a clinical case, the following text investigates the possible uses of religious belief in psychoanalytic treatment. Starting from Sigmund Freud’s theory about religion, presented in Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921) and The Future of an Illusion (1927), the text proceeds to later contributions by Donald Winnicott regarding the possible uses of objects, including immaterial and from the culture ones. The article below explores how the presence of Christian churches in the country influences the analytic setting and how we, as psychoanalysts, can listen to these beliefs.
