Abstract

WETZEL, Sonia Guimarães. Thomas Mann and war: from exaltation to denunciation of the worldwide feast of death. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2023, vol.45, n.75, pp.30-40.  Epub Aug 02, 2024. ISSN 0101-3106.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0101-3106.v45n75.04.

The author presents Einstein’s and Freud’s ideas on the possible causes of war. Drawing on elements of a biography of the brothers Heinrich and Thomas Mann, she seeks to highlight the differences in their political conceptions during a long span of their lives and the changes that Thomas underwent as he shifted from being a conservative bourgeois and headstrong Germanist to a staunch defender of democracy and the republic, a universalist who put all his resources and prestige into the task of denouncing fascism and war.

Keywords : conservatism; Germanism; Hitler; changes; democracy.
