Abstract

This paper is a critique of the American film Freedom writers (2007), directed by Richard Lagravenese. The purpose is to discuss the symbols of war, survival, freedom, and peace presented on screen and constitutive of the symbolic operation which the filmic object performs and causes in us while we watch its scenes. I seek to translate the stimuli and impacts of this operation on myself, which generates a mental attitude that I symbolized in three ways, through the symbol of mutilation, therapy, and writing, aiming to contribute to the debate of “War and peace, an odyssey”.
