Abstract

BIZ, Ricardo. The role of woman in the Orpheus myth. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2023, vol.45, n.76, pp.79-93.  Epub Aug 16, 2024. ISSN 0101-3106.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0101-3106.v45n76.09.

The author considers the role of women in the myth of Orpheus, especially in the passage of Eurydice’s rescue from Hell and the attack launched by the Bacchantes against the hero. Orphism was a religious doctrine dating back to the 7th century b.C. and was marked by “body-mind” dualism. Orpheus’s myth also has a strong dualism man-woman. However, there is no fruitful encounter between the genders, as Orpheus barely joins Eurydice (who is separated from Orpheus early by death) and does not join the Bacchantes (who, in fact, slayed him). In this article, we deepen the vision of the decision-making of the female characters of the myth, making connections with the psychoanalytic theory.

Keywords : Orpheus; female; mythology; woman; psychoanalysis.
