The paper aims to discuss the impact of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer within the patient's family structure, particularly analyzing what happens to the patient's siblings. Having as a theoretical background the contributions of Freud and Winnicott, the paper relates the concept of trauma to the experience of helplessness and isolation experienced by the patient's siblings when the family has to deal with the complex issues related to the illness. The importance of an analytical intervention with the family members is emphasized in order to open up a possibility of working through feelings of discontinuity, helplessness and ambivalence.
